History of the Lodge
The Lodge dates from 1821 and was built by the Duke of Sutherland as the ‘Manse of Assynt’, home to the church minister for the whole parish of Assynt.
The Lodge, a grade B listed building, was often used as an annex to the nearby Inchnadamph hotel during the first half of the last century throughout the sporting season. It was substantially extended in 1937 by Nottingham clothes manufacturer Martin Shepherd, and subsequently used as a highland shooting lodge by various wealthy families under the ownership of Lord and Lady Rootes, owners of Rootes Motors.
By 1995 it had fallen into disrepair after lying empty for 6 years following an abandoned renovation. Following extensive renovations in 1996 under the new owner, geologist Chris Rix, the Lodge opened for guests that summer as a hostel and field centre.
The Lodge received a ‘tick’ in the 2008 ‘Scotland the Best’ guidebook. It’s one of only a handful of rural hostels in Scotland to gain the sought-after ‘one of the best of its kind in Scotland’ accolade.
Now under new ownership (May 2022), the Lodge will continue its tradition and reputation within both the local and wider areas of welcoming geology groups, private groups and those adventurers with a love of exploration within the magic of Assynt, with fresh and exciting updates in the pipeline too.
We look forward to seeing you here at the Lodge.
